Flight and Hell's Midget

Petty lay on his bed, hands clenched around the back of his head, staring up at his ceiling. It had been a slow week thus far and Petty now found himself bored. He disliked being bored. Meant nothing was happening.

Swinging his legs around, Petty sat up, legs arched due to the small distance the bed and the floor had between them and leaning forward, placed his hands on his knees then peered around the room in vain hope of finding something to release him of his appearing relentless boredom.

Getting to his feet, Petty stretches out his lack of activity and was awarded with the clicking of tendons. With a glance over to an ever sleeping Shadow vein, Petty sighed.

Simple for you I guess, just sleep and be cared for by me….

Petty began to survey his room; little had changed for a long time and dust reflected this fact. The only difference really being the huge amount of stacked up books, a pair of curtains Rebekh put up for some reason over the window, it wasn’t like sun could make it’s way through the grime which had a near permanent home on it. Shrugging Petty carried on his survey of his living space and stopped dead at a piece of paper stuck to a wall, written on it the words:

Take Creppy for a ride, please! Signed Rebekh

The truth be told, Petty had almost forgotten about the Phantom bat, and hadn’t summoned it once since being give it.

Crossing his arms, Petty turned and walked to the edge of the room, turning about again pursing his lips and whistled a little half heartedly and stood waiting for a sign of the Phantom bat….Time passed and nothing. Petty strained his eyes in case indeed the Phantom bat had shown, but was just not visible, as it did cause problems for Petty to see it.

With the on going silence, Petty shrugged to himself, pursed his lips once more and whistled louder and harder than the previous attempt. This time silence almost prevailed, but battling it a slight flapping of far distance wings made itself heard. Petty smiled as a Phantom bat formed before him, complete with saddle.

Slowly Petty walked toward the bat, a sense of anxiety flowing around him. Would he actually be able to ride the bat, or would he just pass through it? It sure didn’t seem to be very…..tangible.

Taking hold of the saddle, Petty hoisted himself up, and much to his surprise was able to touch the Phantom bat, though cold and seemingly giving off a sense of dread. Petty concluded that it could have some degree of control on its non-corporeal/corporeal nature.

Now, on the bat, in the saddle, but now what? How does one get it to move?

As though reading Petty’s thoughts, or just bored with waiting, Creppy unfurled its gigantic wings with a few test flaps then began to levitate from the floor. An abrupt gust of cold, bone chilling air, caused the entry to the room to fly open, and out flew Creepy with Petty on top, still trying to regain his balance from the sudden shock of flight.

Up into the starry moon lit sky flew Petty and Crepusculum aliger, with a glance back at the quickly disappearing entrance to his home. Petty gaurs in wonder as from his estimate Creppy couldn’t making it out of the hole, that strengthened the belief Petty had in the Phantom Bats control of it’s non-corporeal/corporeal nature. A distance howl of Shadow Vein quickly became nothing as Crepusculum aliger speed gathered, fast and fast through the night they both flew, the wind gathering around him, blocking out every noise but the howl of the passing wind and beating of Crepusculum aliger’s wings.

Composing himself, Petty looked about at passing buildings, streets, and landmarks. It was breath taking, wondrous, and Petty knew this. He hadn’t had a break to take in beauty for a long time and this, now at the dead of night, summed it up perfectly. The beating of Crepusculum aliger’s wings put Petty off a little as he glanced at them, the beating and the movement appeared to be out of synch, though disturbing, it was also fascinating. After images, blurred but still visable, were left in the wake of each beat.

Suddenly, Crepusculum aliger plummeted from her placement in the sky towards the roof tops and streets below. Grasping the saddle for his life, Petty grit his teeth and as he thought he was going to die a death he had never dreamed of, Creppy corrected her course and flew close to the ground. The wind bellowed Petty’s hair from its pony tail, causing it to flow freely in the traveling wind. People cursed, people ran and people screamed at the passing figure who floated on the wind, so some said, others saw a gigantic bat, then didn’t but, much to Petty’s surprise nothing was knocked over from the movement of Crepusculum aliger.

From the streets, Petty ascended, passing by a near by roof sending a shapely feminine figure ducking from the bat. Petty would have sworn he could see through the woman, but had no time to check as Creppy continued on her course and settled to an elegant flow in the air, just cruising forward.

Time passed, and Petty had regained his seating, in front of him he saw a tall open belfry of a largish building looming down on him, he hadn’t noticed it in the distance until now. The belfry was on the left hand of the building. A large population of bats hung in the distant air, flying or on the top of the tower itself. Petty had not known of the building, as Creppy flew into the belfry and landed.

Jumping off Creppy, Petty stood and looked about his unknown destination.

A bell tower? But why? Hmm, perhaps going back to where you once roosted?
