A Story of Merdread

: by Arcadain

This is a tale of a great war known as the Battle of Gara.

For reasons long since forgotten a vampire of great renown, Merdread, called upon dead creatures across the realm. At his command they rose up and attempted to take the Mages Guild by force. They were legion and the mages were taken by surprise. Further, to the dismay of most mages several of their number chose to join with the unliving vampire, offered the promise of riches and power, they cared not for their brethren.

As a result the mages were at a severe disadvantage and so, at first appeared close to being destroyed... However, to save themselves the mages called upon the dragons of Cosrin, who, to aid their allies, swarmed upon the undead, driving them back. Realizing that he could be defeated, Merdread called upon the evil mages that had joined with him and allowed them into his home. There he crafted from magic places for them to study in peace. Founding the mighty warlock’s subguild, the Coven.

In return the warlocks built for him two magic focuses. The first one was to be used as a center for magic, attracting it to the guild. The second used to raise from death the dragons that had been slain by the minions of Merdread. These undead dragons were then sent to battle against the mages.

Approaching the end of the battle of Gara it came to pass that the Mages Guild, seeing they would not suceed, called upon the aid of the knights of Cosrin to strike against the undead. The paladins were at that time the elite Knights, the greatest of their kind, a tradition that has long since been lost in the mists of time. The cursed Paladins finally breached the walls of the newborn guild and approached Merdread. There Merdread battled the phalanx of five hundred Paladins alone for five days, slaying all but a few with his magic. Finally, weakened and almost defenseless the mightiest paladin of all, Krean, was able to lay his hands upon Merdread and bring about his destruction.

Thus ended the battle of Gara with a victory for the mages, who, with the aid of the dragons and knights of Cosrin were able to defeat Merdread.
